Understanding ADHD

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, meaning it's usually lifelong. More than half of children with ADHD continue to have symptoms as adults (CADDRA, 2020). It's also highly heritable, so it can be passed from parents to children (CADDRA, 2020).

Some people mainly have attention difficulties, others mainly hyperactivity and impulsivity, and some have both. Because ADHD varies from person to person, an assessment can be helpful.

Trouble focusing can make it hard to:

  • Follow a schedule
  • Stay organized
  • Keep up with bills, work, or school
  • Avoid getting easily distracted
  • Avoid becoming too focused
  • Notice what's happening around them
  • Notice social cues

Hyperactivity and impulsivity can cause:

  • Fidgeting or inability to sit still
  • Trouble waiting their turn or interrupting
  • Acting without thinking
  • Difficulty sitting still during activities that require focus
Why Get Assessed

Why have an Adult ADHD Assessment?

The first step to feeling better is understanding what's causing the difficulties. Problems with attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity show up in ADHD but also in other mental health or physical health conditions. It's important to figure out the right cause of your symptoms so you can get the right treatment.

An assessment helps you find the strategies that are more likely to work for you. If you have ADHD, focusing on evidence-based methods for managing attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity can make a big difference.

Virtual Care

How do Virtual Assessments Work?

We are a virtual clinic serving residents of Nova Scotia. We understand that attending in-person appointments can be difficult, so we come to you!

People in other Atlantic provinces are encouraged to contact us, as there are limited spaces for those outside Nova Scotia. If you are not a resident of Atlantic Canada, please see our resources available for anyone.

What you need:

  • Reliable, secure internet
  • Quiet, private space
  • A device with a camera (smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.)
How to Book

How do I book an adult ADHD assessment?

You can request a screening by contacting the clinic using the form below. You'll be sent a screening questionnaire about your feelings, challenges, and mental health history. This helps determine if a virtual assessment is right for you. If it is, we'll offer an appointment. If not, we'll provide resources to help you find a psychologist.

The screening is free because our goal is to help you find the psychologist who is the best fit for you.

The Process

What happens during an ADHD assessment?

1

Initial interview

2-hour virtual session to understand your symptoms and challenges.

2

Questionnaires

Several forms about your symptoms, difficulties, mental health, and medical history.

3

Collateral interview

With your permission, I'll speak to someone who knows you well to gather additional information.

4

Follow-up

A shorter session (30-90 minutes) to clarify and gather more information.

5

Feedback

We discuss whether you have ADHD or another mental health condition and explore management strategies if needed.

What Happens if I am Diagnosed with ADHD?

If diagnosed with ADHD, Dr. Clair will write a report with evidence-based strategies that can help you manage symptoms. If requested, Dr. Clair will also include a summary of recommended accommodations, that you can give to your workplace or school.

There is no additional charge for a summary of recommended accommodations for school or work; however, there are additional charges for other types of documentation. Please contact the clinic with any questions and she would be happy to discuss these with you.

Are ADHD Assessments Covered by Insurance?

An ADHD assessment usually costs between $1,500 and $2,500, depending on complexity. More involved assessments may cost more, and we'll discuss this during your initial appointment so you can decide if you would like to go ahead with the assessment.

Insurance plans often cover all or part of the assessment but it's important to check with your provider before booking an assessment. Some insurers may require pre-approval, so it is important to check before booking.
